SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM

The Congress will be held at the BOLOGNA FIERE CONGRESS CENTRE, with the Pre-Congress wetlabs being held at the Veterinary School of the University of Bologna, located some 12 km from the centre of the city.

The Wetlabs will include small and large animal topics, ranging from a stem cell & PRP workshop to locking plate wetlabs. Subjects for the Pre-Congress seminars include arthroscopy, osteoarthritis and sports medicine.

Advanced Diagnostic Imaging and Forelimb Lameness

This course follows from the one in 2009 on “Orthopaedic Poor Performance: Hindlimb and Back”. This is an intensive course aimed at delegates with experience of orthopaedic work-ups and advanced imaging techniques. Radiography, ultrasonography, scintigraphy, CT and MRI will be covered – with an emphasis on racehorses and sport horses. The lameness session will cover sport-specific problems in the forelimbs and neck, again covering sport horses and racehorses.
Distal Limb Ultrasonography Core Skills Workshop

This workshop is designed to provide practical instruction in the technique of obtaining and interpreting ultrasonograms of the distal limb of the horse. The workshop is aimed at new graduates and those wishing to refresh their skills. The course covers the basics of ultrasonography, the ultrasonographic anatomy, scanning of the superficial flexor tendon, deep digital flexor tendon, palmar/plantar annular ligament, suspensory ligament and the fetlock region and includes 3 hours of practical instruction.
Equine Lameness Workshop

This workshop is suitable for vets working in mixed or equine practice, who wish to increase or review their skills in equine lameness diagnostic techniques. The day’s programme is split into practical and lecture sessions covering basic and some advanced techniques. Teaching material will be provided to allow a full range of skills to be demonstrated and practiced. Much of the day will be spent in small groups, with individual sessions kept to less than 45 minutes.
Advanced Equine Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Veterinary Surgeons

With experience totalling over 5000 MRI examinations, the International team of speakers will discuss the current status and future directions of this, now indispensable, modality. Topics such as comparison with computed tomography, digital radiography and scintigraphy, emerging techniques such as contrast studies, cartilage imaging and lesion aging will be discussed in detail and from a global perspective.
